Deciding to add a pet to the family is not a decision to take lightly. Many people underestimate the responsibility of owning a pet. A pet needs supplies, not just food, shelter and water. Once you get your new dog, you need to purchase a leash, collar, and a tag for identification. Pet ID tags are important as it provides essential information so that your pet can be returned home safety should it stray.

What type of pet ID tag should you choose?

You dog tag should reflect the dog’s size and personality, and co-ordinate with the dog collar. It is recommended that your pet ID tag contrasts the colour of your dog’s fur as it will be easily seen. The size and pattern of the dog tag should be appropriate for the size of the dog. An oversized tag will annoy a small dog, while a tiny tag may go unnoticed on a larger dog. The best material for pet ID tags is stainless steel or hard, thick plastic for durability.

What information should you include on the pet ID tag?

The first line should state your pet’s name. The street address of the owner should be on the second line, while the last line should read the owner’s home or cell number if possible. If privacy is a concern for you, you can exclude your street address and rather add two or three sets of numbers – i.e. home, cell and work, or possibly neighbor.

Why should you purchase a pet ID tag?

Pet ID tags are a form of identification for your dog and a safety feature.  If your dog runs away or gets lost, he can be easily found and returned to its owner. Pet ID tags are a simplest and fastest method for a dog to be identified and safely returned.

Are there any disadvantages to pet ID tags?

The only disadvantage is that the pet ID tag could fall off or become unreadable over time. Tags can loosen or get lost while your pet is playing. You, the owner, should regularly check to make sure the tag is still properly secured, especially after rigorous play. Also, regularly check to see if the writing on the tag is still legible. As they wear, the tag could become difficult to read.
