    Why the little things matter

    little things matter

When it comes to having your own business it’s easy to forget about the little things in the hurry to get the big things done. People find it easy to say how lucky you are to have your own business, almost as if your working life is easier without having a boss breathing down your neck, but the fact is that being a small business owner can be tough.

There is no such thing as clocking off on time; no such thing as clocking off at all! Having your own business means always thinking about work and that can make it really hard for people to relax and take time off. With all the accounts and paperwork, staff management, suppliers to contact and stock to control, not to mention the day to day running of the business, it is no surprise that often the little things can go unnoticed or forgotten about.

Unfortunately, it is the little things that can make the difference between a business that becomes one that locals feel passionately about and want to see succeed or that people return to or make a special effort to go out of their way to enjoy, and one that fails. For example, if you are a food business, you must always ensure that everything you produce and serve is top quality. Extras such as free tasting, event nights and making the effort to source specific items for someone will go a long way to gain customers’ loyalty.

This is just one way that pubs, cafes and restaurants can help make their premises a place that people will want to return too. Flowers on the counter and chocolates with the bills are the most obvious ways, but less obviously so are sanitary dispensers in the bathrooms. Sanitary dispensers and tampon dispensers might not come to mind when you think about improving your business, but the presence of tampon dispensers is just the kind of little thing that can make all the difference.
