Proper care for Swarovski Crystal Jewellery

Swarovski Crystal Jewellery is world renowned for its clarity and sparkle but regular use can lead to it losing its lustre fairly quickly.  So how can you care for and enjoy your Swarovski Crystal over time?

The reason for your crystal jewellery losing its brilliance is the build up of oils from your skin as well as contact with makeup and other beauty products.  These will begin to coat the crystal causing less light to be reflected from each facet.  Luckily cleaning is not difficult although it should be done carefully.  Swarovski do offer a complete cleaning kit which is invaluable in maintaining your crystal in perfect order but if you do not have a cleaning kit then simple household materials can also be used to almost the same effect.

The first consideration is that many cleaning agents for precious stones and metals contain solvents that will damage the crystal and should therefore be avoided.  Instead it is suggested that you use a mixture of lukewarm water and a little soap, which should remove most of the dirt.  If you are dealing with older pieces of jewellery which have not been worn for a long time you might find that a bit more cleaning power is required.  In this case you can add a small amount of rubbing alcohol or surgical spirits to the soap mixture but be careful not to use too much.  Place the piece into a small container, pour the mixture over the piece and swirl (don’t shake) the piece around for a few seconds before drying with a soft cloth which does not give off lint.  A cloth suitable for cleaning reading glasses can also be used but be careful that dirt particles do not cause scratches.  Lens cleaning fluids may be too harsh and should be avoided unless specifically certified for cleaning crystal.

Well looked after, beautiful crystal jewellery can be magical so be sure to look after yours and enjoy it for as long as possible.
